How much do you know about nutrients and the importance of keeping them balanced in the body. When we take medications does this have an affect on the nutrients in the body? To be honest this is not a category I am well educated in but I wanted to find out more information to educate myself as well as help educate others. When I talk about medications I am referring to any man made pills we may take including contraceptives. I had no idea that taking the pill can have an affect on the nutrients in my body. Here are a few things I wanted to share but please remember we are all individuals and it is always best to talk to a professional like your local nutritionist like San Deigo Chiropractor Dr. Henry Wong. He and many other San Diego Chiropractors are branching out and educating themselves and their patients on spinal health, nerve functioning and nutrition.
When you take oral contraceptives it has been shown to deplete the body's six levels of nutrients; zinc, folacin, vitamin B12, riboflavin, pyridoxine and ascorbic acid. For example when our bodies are not getting enough folic acid it can lead to chronic low energy and anemia. I also helps to support the immune system. If you are taking oral contraceptives it is important to replace what is being depleted. In the example of folic acid you can eat foods such as asparagus, almonds and lentils.
Another example is those who are taking heartburn medications to help with suppressing stomach acid but then interferes with the absorption of nutrients like Vitamin B12. Vitamin B12 helps to keep our blood cells and nerves healthy. When are lacking B12 it can cause symptoms such as depression, fatigue, dizziness and vision loss. If you hare taking heartburn medications you can get vitamin B12 from such foods as fish, eggs and poultry.
If you have questions regarding nutrients or medications please contact your local wellness provider. Make sure to ask questions about current medications you are taking or plan on taking and how it will affect your nutrient intake.
